Michael is interested in many issues relating to human communication. This includes the following areas:
- Using social media data in academic research
- The limitations of social media and language technology to minorities and the disabled
- The quoting of public figures in the online press
- The identification of expertise in social media and online communities
His present work for TrISMA involves a lot of collaborations with academics from a wide range of disciplines outside of linguistics and information technology.
